MEDiS Model for a Crude Oil Refinery

The Company

As an example, consider an oil refining company named Penapisan Mudah Sdn Bhd. This company processes crude oil and sells petroleum products to both the local and foreign spot markets. The refinery runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with shutdowns only for maintenance and statutory inspections by the Federal Machineries Department (FMD), the national inspection and certification authority that ensures all critical plant and equipment like pressure vessels, boilers, furnaces, heat exchangers, etc, are properly maintained for the safe operations of the plant.

Brief of the Operations of Penapisan Mudah Sdn Bhd.

  • Penapisan Mudah Sdn Bhd processes both local and foreign crude oils . To meet the market demand for the various petroleum products, the company also injected condensates into the crude oil to produce products of the right mix and in the right quantities.
  • The refinery consumes 4 types of energy: electricity for the electrical equipment and overall lighting; and refinery gas, natural gas and fuel oil for its furnaces, steam boilers and other plant utilities. Electricity is purchased from a supplier, the Elektrik Kuasa Company Sdn Bhd, that provides a metering station within the refinery. Natural gas is purchased from another supplier, Syarikat Gas Asli Sdn Bhd, which is piped into the refinery from the supplier's grid and metering station.
  • For the main feedstock, Penapisan Mudah Sdn Bhd purchases local crude oil from the national oil company, Syarikat Petrolium Negara Sdn Bhd. To produce the light petroleum products, condensates were injected into the crude oil. Condensates are purchased from both local and foreign suppliers. To produce the heavy products like fuel oil and bitumen, foreign crude oils were also imported and processed. Slops produced from the refining operations were also injected into crude for reprocessing. The feedstocks for the refinery are stored in separate storage tanks.
  • The 5 main outputs or products of the refinery are LPG, Petrol, Diesel, Fuel Oil and Bitumen. These products are stored in storage tanks before distribution to the various consumers via rail, road and sea.
